Jeff Green

Jeff Green's mom became so popular during Georgetown’s Final Four run and basically during all of his years at Georgetown that the student body made up their own cheer about her that they would burst into during basketball games.

After the madness of the Final Four and up until he was drafted, she was increasingly more popular that her voicemail is simply “Jeff Green’s Mom!” I love it.

She is such a terrific person, as is his father, and it is easy to see how they raised such a talented, level-headed kid. Their “kid” could be on the verge of becoming an NBA superstar, but make no mistake -- he loves the chance to come home.

At the Nationals game Friday evening, while getting ready to do my live shot for the 6 o’clock sportscast, I looked toward the gathering of fans near home plate when I saw a familiar face from Georgetown -- Jeff Green, the star forward that was drafted in the first round by the Seattle Supersonics. He was in the midst of the crowd with a former teammate, Tyler Crawford.

It was the first time I have spoken to Jeff since I last saw him at the Final Four, and he appears exactly the same, only a little more worldly. He had just gotten home last week from Las Vegas for summer ball and he is here for less than two weeks before he heads out to Seattle to officially start the NBA season.

I asked him about Kevin Durant and how excited he was to be teammates with him, and he was all smiles. It was really great to see him doing so well and excited about embarking -- "growing up,” he called it -- as in heading out west alone with no family and only new friends he’s making in his new teammates. I can’t wait to see what kind of impact he’ll be able to have in his first season with the Sonics.
