A Chance Encounter with David Beckham
I want to tell you this story because I think most people can relate to how sometimes timing is uncanny...
My friend Sherif owns the nightclub Play, which truly is a very cool spot and has turned into one of the great places to go out in the city. But I remember right when I moved here, when he was getting ready to open it, he was telling me what it was going to be like and I was thinking it was a little strange that the bathrooms were co-ed, but after what happened to me Thursday night, I think this should be a citywide mandate and I will never again complain about sharing.
I covered the DC United game Thursday -- the one in which they were playing the LA Galaxy -- and as I’ve said, I was floored by the star power of David Beckham and how the fans went absolutely crazy every time he even touched a soccerball.
Anyway, after the game, I was able to stop by Lima, where some of my friends, colleagues and United players were for a post-game soiree. It was absolutely packed with people crowding up and down the stairs but it was pretty cool to see everyone that showed up, and as I’ve read in other reports about the scene that night, the buzz pretty much was about whether David Beckham was there. (And if you want to read about the moments leading up to the story I'm about to tell you, click here.)
So now, on to my story ... which picks up at Play at about 1:30.
After a couple hours at Lima, a few friends and I decided to stop by Play to catch up with a couple other folks, so we get to Play and you can tell people have started to thin out. So I leave my friends for a moment to take a trip to the restroom ... the co-ed restroom which is in a very dim, open room with a community sink, fancy with modern fixtures and everything.
Here’s where the night went from pretty cool to top five of DC nights. I open the bathroom door to leave the restroom and I almost nail the person waiting to get in smack in the face -- kind of embarrassed but wondering why the person obviously was walking from the wrong side of the line, and then I look up and see ... it’s David Beckham.
I look around and realize, the three or four people that had also been waiting for the restroom are no longer there and there are a handful of body guards and myself, so somehow I went into the restroom at the perfect time as they could not kick me out for his safety and it just so happened that I was behind door No. 2 that he was choosing.
Oh. So here’s the deal: I really respect him, but I have to be completely honest, it's sort of like his persona supercedes him because I have five million timely, normal, maybe even intelligent things I did want to know about, but all I could think of to say at that moment was ... "Oh hey, how are you? This is a pretty cool place."
Like he’s going to be come back here often considering he won’t be playing in DC again this season. Anyway, he remembered me from the press conference and the funny thing was, even though I almost ran over him, he was so courteous, as he was with all of the fans waiting for him that evening, that even though he was there for a reason, clearly to use the restroom, he took the time to stop and say hello.
Anyway, I thanked him and moved on walking out into the main room to see my two friends waiting on the other side of the dance floor, and right away, they say, "Did you see who went back there to the bathroom?"
Yes, I ran into him back there, but they didn’t know how literal that was.
